My frustrating problem is that I can’t make any sense out of the cables (yet)!

Normally I’m good at searching – but – in this case, searching just brings everyone’s confusion to the fore! Including mine.

Taking your post as my starting outline, are ‘these’ the available E39-related cable types?

  • Carsoft 6.5 cables (RS232 only, ADS + OBD1 + OBD2 connectors)
  • INPA/EDIABAS cables (OBD2 connectors + adapter for ADS interface)
  • INPA D-CAN cables (OBD2 connectors only)
  • Modified VAGcom KKL Cable to work with BMW
  • Modified USB J2534 cable

Bluebee
Sorry I threw you a curve with the reference to K-line.

What you need for your 2002 is an OBD cable that claims BMW INPA compatibility. Although it may not be stated these will be K-line cables. Your 2002 does not have the 20 pin round plug (commonly called ADS) used in earlier E39s. If you wish, buy the more expensive D-CAN cable so you can connect to newer models too, they are backward compatible.

There have been about a dozen signalling protocols commonly used by various manufacturers for OBD and OEM proprietary ports. The various protocols use different pins in the plug. For the E39, BMW chose a protocol that uses the so called K-line; one of the ISO 9141 versions I think. The more recent models use a flavour of CAN, which also/still uses the OBD port. The most recent BMW models have an additional port, MOST, which is a very high speed fibre optic system. Models with MOST still have the electrically based OBD port for diagnostics as mandated by law.

Some people use ADS as shorthand for the 20 pin round plug found in the engine bay on earlier E39s (and other models) before OBD was mandated by law. Apparently this terminology is not accurate. I’ve seen expanations that ADS is a diagnostic head used by BMW, but since it was used only with the 20 pin plug the the association has become established. Some, but not all, early E39s with the 20 pin port need virtual ADS software (trick EDIABAS, INPA, DIS, etc. into thinking an ADS head is attached) in order to access all modules in the car.

The BMW dealer systems use a diagnostic head (there have been several versions over the years) which has provision for additional leads that turns DIS into a full featured, multi-function voltage, current, oscilloscope, etc. diagnostic system in addition to DTCs, coding and programming. These heads cost hundreds to thousands; only the exceptionally keen DIYers go to the expense.

I’ve no experience with other cables. But people in the diagnostic software forum describe how Carsoft, Modified VAGcom KKL, J2534, etc. cables can be made to work on BMWs with varying degrees of customization and difficulty.

If you subscribe to the KISS philosophy, buy “BMW INPA” compatible cables; OBD only or with extra 20 pin round adaptor (that plugs into the OBD cable) depending on the car’s model year.

I’d like to run the VANOS bleed on my ’08 M5 as it’s rattly at startup, although it doesn’t throw any codes. From what I understand, DIS v44 can do this. I’ve been being a diligent boy and searching the interwebs but am having a heck of a time.

I found this thread that details setting up the VMWare virtual machine and installing EasyDIS v44, but the pictures and, more importantly, the download links, are missing. How to install DIS w/ EasyDIS v44 step-by-step

I also found a site called bmwcode.com (I think) that had links to the files on some service called Mega (again, I think) which made me install some kind of plugin just to work with their service, but each time I attempted to download the files, they’d throw errors around 80-90% and not proceed any further. Seriously, is it that hard to just serve files for download?

Just posted this comment on the Beemer Lab page.

So, after getting frustrated, I figured–if it’s this much of a pain, there must be someone selling a simpler version. Sure enough, there are multiple items on Ebay.

I’ve emailed the seller about which version he recommends and, barring any compelling reason not to, will be buying whatever he suggests.

Any updates? I’m about to give up on INPA. Everyone that has DIS seems to be really happy. Thanks for any leads.

I got an updated silver diagnostic cable and software package from these guys
BMW DCAN OBD USB Diagnostic Fault Code Cable – This Lead allows full Coding Programming and Diagnostics for your BMW D-CAN
The install went without a hitch on my Win 7 x64 machine without a hitch and just used ISTA/D (Rheingold) to clear out my brake pad error (finally) and reset all CBS info.
I had previously purchased a blue cable and older software package, so they offered a screaming deal for the full-meal-deal that I couldn’t pass up.

Cool. I have the CD’s and the Silver Cable i use for dataloging but never transfered the cds to non optical drive computer.
If i upgrade to the new software and the BMW reference pack, do you know if i can just download it all, or is it update to the existing program?

Will fwd you the email they sent, it’s all download. I have the reference pack ISOs saved but haven’t burned them to a disc yet.

I have the cable from BM Technic, but I can’t use their software anymore because thank you WIndows 10 upgrade. It messed up the DIS install so the Virtual Machine can no longer see the car (probably something to do with network config). But I can’t reinstall the software package because BM Technic v2 put activation on their setup program, and since they are out of business, their servers are down.

I am curious if I could try your software pack with the cable I have from BM Technic if that’d work.

Hmm not sure, but I did ask BM Technic awhile back if their cable would work with other software and they said no, but I didn’t believe them.

The bcables software pack did not include DIS (probably a good thing, I hated using it), and I upgraded to the silver cable so I could use Rheingold / ISTA-D instead. PM me your email.

I’m almost to the point of ‘trying’ those recommended sofware methods! :)

Just to summarize, here’s where I think we are on this quest:

KEY:
YES = The tool will set and unset the BMW automatic door lock feature.
NO = The tool will not set or unset the BMW automatic door lock feature.

SUMMARY:
YES: GT1, Progman, Easy-DIS v44 only, NCS Expert, INPA, Carsoft (v7.x & v8.x only), Launch X431
NO: Peake, Carsoft v6.x, Easy-DIS versions after v44

Recommended:
~$250: Carsoft, version 7.x & 8.x, CarsoftInternational (not earlier versions)
~$500: GT1, version DIS SSS?, BMW group tester 1
~$???: Progman, v?, seems to have superceded Easy-DIS
~$3,000 Launch X-431

At ~$3,000, we probably have to put the Launch X-431 on the “recommended but very expensive list”. :)

I can elaborate a bit on some of the software listed above. Everything listed below is BMW software, none is aftermarket by 3rd party.

EDIBAS is BMW’s interface language to its modules, some call it an API. All the application programs below use EDIBAS to talk to the various car modules; except for ISTA where I don’t know. EDIBAS isn’t run directly; it does have to have it on the computer so application programs have it’s instructions available.

In BMW speak, “programming” as a noun is the set of instructions stored in a module to give it functionality. Programming as a verb refers to loading a more recent version into a module as BMW releases them rather than actually writing instructions to tell a module how to perform. “Coding” is setting the options that the programming in a module will recognize & permit, i.e. options available in a module. For example: turn on/off daytime running lights, setting “Car and Key Programming” options (which is misnamed in strict BMW speak.) The door lock feature mentioned in Bluebee’s post is turned on/off by coding.

All the applications below are available free as internet downloads, except ISTA.
All cover every BMW model sold up to the the release date of the version, or at least those with electonic modules. So the E39 is covered by all applications. All will work with the round 20 pin engine bay plug as well as the OBD II plug. All will address every module in the car; most aftermarket applications skip several or many.

GT1 is a hardware/software bundle for BMW dealers. The s/w was DIS / Progman.
SSS is the h/w s/w bundle that superceeded GT1. Confusingly, also the name of software that replaced DIS/Progman.

DIS, Progman & SSS run in UNIX & are tricky to install on Windows machines. There are very detailed step by step guides to help one through the maze.

ISTA
is the current BMW dealer software. Not available “in the wild”

EasyDIS
is DIS V44 modified to make the UNIX/Windows steps easier for installation.
I thought YES to the door lock feature but if Bluebee has better info, I defer to her.

I’m afraid not. You will need the cable. And INPA is useful for reading modules but will not code modules to the car or change coding in modules already installed.

My post above has some explanation.

Is there a kit that comes with everything i need?

So the $25 usb cable to obd2 can code bmw modules like the LKM and ABS? Im so confused now..

Jimmy what would you recommend for a a serious DIY’er? My main concern is being able to code the modules and be able to program other BMW specific features like auto locks?
Key programming would need another device totally CORRECT??

I wouldn’t know what to recommend. I have had the same question about 2 years ago, and the search narrowed down between the GT1 and the Launch. At the time, the GT1 cost 2x more than the Launch and it only work with BMW. The Launch could do every car made, so I coughed up the $2500 + $500 for miscellaneous bits and pieces that were BMW specific and never looked back. If I need a GT1 for something that my scanner cannot do, I use my friend’s, he will let me use it.

The ultimate scanner depends how much money you want to spend. If you want a nice scanner, you will have to spend a lot, but you will have a whole bunch of features that are very helpful in diagnosis like an oscilloscope, built in circuit tester, etc.

Let me rephrase my question.
What is the cheapest route to go if i want to be able to code new modules and read ABS and Airbag errors? Please bare with me i just dont want to spend the money and not be able to do what i wanted to do.

Something to consider. The cable in your post has a serial connection. USB may be more convenient, & perhaps save you the cost of a serial/USB adaptor. You will see many of the USB cables quoted as CAN capable. E39s do not use CAN, later BMW models do if that’s of any value to you.

JACKPOT! thats the answer i needed to calm my nerves lol. You guys are the best! Thank you for being so patient with my asinine questions.
Im gonna go with a serial cable since Ive read its the most stable and my older laptop has the connection. Do i need a newer high power laptop or will my old “craptop” do the job? Its stable and doest crash but it is OLD

– EDIABAS suite (inpa, WinKFP, NCSexpert, etc. etc.).
– DIS V44 (last version where DIS did coding and diagnosis)
– DIS V54 (for diagnosing cars newer than 2002)
– SSS/Progman (BMW coding software after DIS V44)

I have a 160gig hard drive an 1gb ram on an HP NR3610 laptop.

See:
– Description of Carsoft, GT1, INPA, DIS, EDIABAS, & Peake (1) & which can modify the auto-lock car door feature (1) & what does Carsoft do anyway (1) (2) (3) (4)

Easy dis v44 and Making sense of NCSExpert, DIS

I was surprised to realize that Autlogic wasn’t mentioned once in this thread.

Does anyone know if Autologic can unset the annoying E39 autolock door feature?

Regarding NCS Dummy: Yes, it does help, but it does not have a lot of information in it and translates some entries that are misleading, so beware.

I completely agree: NCS Expert without good knowledge on how it is used can be very expensive in the end.

Since I am German, please do not hesitate to PM me if anyone has any question with regard to translation/meaning. I will help the best I can! :)

If someone could answer this (apparently unanswered) question from dvsgene from this thread:
E39 (1997 – 2003) > * * Auto Door Locks * *

It would be very useful to those of us who have the old Carsoft cables lying around unusable:

Are the interfaces compatible with each other?

From my understanding, the Carsoft 6.5 interface does NOT work with INPA/NCS. I let a fellow enthusiast borrow my Carsoft cable recently, so I cannot go out and test it.

I am sure, though, that there is someone out there, who could run this test quickly!

Making sense of ADS, EDIABAS, INPA, NCS, NFS, GT1/DIS, Progman, ISIS, WinKPT, Carsoft

I can elaborate a bit on some of the software listed above.

I got so frustrated trying to simply UNDERSTAND what is out there, that I just now opened a new thread:
– Making sense of ADS, EDIABAS, INPA, NCS, NFS, GT1/DIS, Progman, ISIS, WinKPT, Carsoft

Let’s ask each of us to please add and/or correct organization and/or definitions so that, at the end of this thread, we can finally summarize for the world, the relevant currently available ‘things’ & ‘actions’ for BMW diagnostic, coding, & programming purposes.

  • What cable to buy and where to buy it for the best price
  • Whether a USB-only PC can work (or if RS232 is required)
  • What tools to download, and how to unpack them (usually rar files)
  • What order to install the tools so that they have a chance to work
  • What car-specific edits need to be made to the configuration files
  • What sequence to use with the tools to reset the door lock feature

Any and all help is appreciated.

At the moment, I’m giving up on the Carsoft 6.5 cables that I have since they require hacks to work with the EDIABAS-based tools (NCSExpert, for example) – and since they’re RS232-only serial port cables.

EDIT: These are the suggested cables:

EDIT: This was posted by RDL today:

EDIT: Here is the software order RDL suggests today over here:

1. For me personally, install INPA first, for my E39
2. Then install NCS Expert and NCS for Dummies => enables coding and installation is easy. But be careful, get help on the forum if you’re not sure before using it.
3. Then install EasyDIS for the diagnostic support and aids. Plus it will do CIP and module programming updates if you wish. Also do resets after component replacement, e.g. steering position sensor. Excercise the ABS if you have to. Do a brake bleed after draining the system dry. etc. It was the dealer software while our E39s were current models.
I believe that the data files are circa 2005.

I have installed Progman V32 too, but haven’t used it other than to verify it works. It is a pretty face on EasyDIS but does only coding and programming. One still needs EasyDIS for diagnostics. Doing all over again, I wouldn’t bother. If I had a newer model it would probably be worthwhile for the newer data files.

Here is very useful version information from RDL!

For when you start looking around with NCS Expert.
The auto door locking is controlled by the General Module.

My experience is limited to my ’03 530. Anyone with later model cars should ask elsewhere for advice. I have no experience with non-BMW software so cannot comment on those.

One must install INPA so that EDIABAS is installed. I have 6.4.3 and it works on my E39. I’ve noticed that some people have trouble with DIS and Progman with later versions of EDIABAS (but maybe newer car models). I’m not aware of any benefits to the E39 with later versions of EDIABAS. I also subcribe the the philosophy of “not broke – don’t fix.”
INPA is usefull. It’s faster to load than EasyDIS and will read module data, read & clear DTCs as well as perform some car module function checks.

NCS Expert, combined with NCS Dummy (also called NCS made easy by Revtor) can code dozens of options in every module in the car. Most relate to different markets variants. If you want to “play around” & give your car some European flavours, NCS Expert is needed.
The only time I used it was to enable Comfort Close by the key remote, which is not made available in North America; legal issues apparently. EasyDIS won’t set this option. I’m always locking the car only to discover a window or sunroof open.

The <GT1 – GT1_v44_programs.iso image file> appears it might be the true dealer software. EasyDIS is DIS hacked to have much easier installation; otherwise supposed to be identical. Maybe though the image is set up to copy to disc ready to run. If so it would be easier than installing EasyDIS; otherwise, for masochists only.

GT1 is definitely hardware, not software. GT1 is the portable/laptop touchscreen system available to dealers when the E39 was a current model. GT1s came loaded with DIS software and people have conflated the terms just as people used to use IBM and Windows interchangeably to distinguish from Apple.

Regards later versions. After V44, DIS became a diagnostic only system. Progman handled coding and programming, and confusingly has lower version numbers. So most people would consider a DIS V45 to be a step backward.

It is possible to update the car data files on a V44 installation & keep coding / programming functionality. V57 is the most recent I’ve seen. However I don’t try to keep up to date; I doubt that BMW is doing much in the way of updates/upgrades for E39s any longer.

For the record, this related thread was posted today:

Now that I have INPA, DIS and SSSProgman running, I wonder what others have coded to their bimmers. So far I did:
Update software for ECU and Tranny, ComfortClosing windows (auto-up windows with key fob), auto doors lock.

  • русифицированная оболочка;
  • диагностика автомобилей BMW выпуска 1995-2009 годов;
  • получение данных блоков управления с помощью адаптеров;
  • работа на Windows возможна только через виртуальную машину.
